Associate Vice President

Michael Katz is the Associate Vice President for Intellectual Property and Economic Development at the University of Rhode Island and the Executive Director of URi Ventures (formerly the URI Research Foundation), which provides oversight for Polaris MEP. Michael began his research career, first as a faculty member at the University of Connecticut, then as a staff scientist at the Becton-Dickinson Research Center in North Carolina, and Bayer, Inc. in West Haven, Conn. Michael then began his work in economic development, first as intellectual property manager at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and then as Associate Director for Science and Technology Ventures at Columbia University. He moved on to become Director of the Office of Industrial Partnerships at Virginia Commonwealth University and later Executive Director of Intellectual Property and Industry Research Alliances at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was responsible for managing industry/university research collaborations and technology licensing. Before coming to URI, he was principal of Strategic Partnership Advisors in Gaithersburg, Md, a consulting firm advising companies on forming research and development relationships with universities.
