Polaris MEP Releases 2025 State of Manufacturing Report for Rhode Island

Polaris MEP is proud to announce the release of the 2025 State of Manufacturing Rhode Island Report, a comprehensive look at the trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping one of the Ocean State’s most vital industries.
This latest report builds on the foundation established in 2022, offering updated data, fresh insights, and a forward-looking perspective on how manufacturing continues to drive economic growth, innovation, and workforce development across Rhode Island.
A Data-Driven Look at Rhode Island Manufacturing
The 2025 report combines multiple sources, including industry trend analysis, the Voice of Manufacturing Survey (VOMS), and insights from manufacturers, policymakers, and community leaders—to provide a well-rounded view of the sector. Nearly 200 industry leaders contributed to the survey, representing approximately 125 manufacturing companies across the state.
Key findings reinforce the critical role manufacturing plays in Rhode Island’s economy:
- Over 50,000 Rhode Islanders are employed in manufacturing roles
- Manufacturing workers earn the highest average wages of any industry
- The sector has a significant multiplier effect, supporting jobs across supply chains and related industries
In addition, the report highlights four major priorities emerging across the manufacturing ecosystem:
- Reducing Costs and Improving Efficiency
Nearly half of surveyed manufacturers identified cost reduction as a top priority, focusing on energy efficiency, waste reduction, and supply chain optimization. - Strengthening Talent Pipelines
Workforce challenges remain front and center. With one-third of the workforce aged 55 or older and ongoing skills gaps, companies are increasingly investing in training, apprenticeships, and alternative career pathways. - Increasing Technology Adoption
From automation to data analytics and cybersecurity, manufacturers are accelerating adoption of advanced technologies to stay competitive. In fact, 50% of respondents cited new technology and equipment as a top priority. - Expanding into New Markets
Despite economic uncertainty, Rhode Island manufacturers are actively pursuing growth through new products, customers, and supply chain opportunities—particularly in defense and emerging industries.
