What is a NAICS Code, and Why Should Rhode Island Manufacturers Care?

Demystifying NAICS Codes for RI’s Manufacturing Community

If you’re a Rhode Island manufacturer looking to grow, compete for contracts, or simply better understand your business data, there’s one small code with big implications: your NAICS code.

So, What is a NAICS Code?

NAICS stands for the North American Industry Classification System. It’s a six-digit code that classifies businesses based on their economic activity. It’s the standard used by the federal government (and many state agencies) to collect, analyze, and publish statistical data about the U.S. economy.

In simple terms? It tells the world what kind of work your company does.

For example:

  • 311811 = Retail Bakeries

  • 332710 = Machine Shops

  • 336411 = Aircraft Manufacturing

Why It Matters to Manufacturers

  1. Government Contracts & Funding:
Many federal and state programs—including grants, loans, and procurement opportunities—require you to list your NAICS code. Having the right one can open doors to manufacturing-specific resources.
  2. Market Research & Competitiveness:
NAICS codes are used to group businesses by industry. This makes it easier to analyze your market, benchmark your performance, and identify potential collaborators—or competitors.
  3. Certification & Compliance:
If you’re applying for certifications (like HUBZone, Minority-Owned Business, or Woman-Owned Small Business), your NAICS code is part of the puzzle.
  4. Data Accuracy:
From census data to economic forecasts, your NAICS code helps ensure that your business is properly represented in the data that shapes Rhode Island’s manufacturing future.

Do You Need a NAICS Code?

Yes—especially if:

  • You’re pursuing government contracts or working with agencies that require it.

  • You’re applying for financial assistance or participating in economic development programs.

  • You want to appear in industry directories or databases (like SAM.gov).

Even if you’re not actively seeking those things, having the correct code helps agencies like Polaris MEP support you better.

How to Find or Get Your NAICS Code

  1. Use the NAICS Search Tool:
Visit www.naics.com/search and enter keywords that describe your main line of business. You’ll see a list of possible codes.
  2. Determine Your Primary Business Activity:
If you do multiple things (say, metal fabrication and product assembly), choose the one that accounts for the largest portion of your revenue.
  3. Match Your Operations:
Read the descriptions carefully to select the best-fit code. You can also contact Polaris MEP for support in interpreting them.
  4. Include it in Your Registrations:
Once you have your code, update it in your business records—especially if you’re registered in systems like SAM.gov or applying for grants.
