Rhode Island Manufacturers Discuss Industry Challenges and Opportunities With Senator Reed

Polaris MEP recently hosted a manufacturing roundtable with U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, bringing Rhode Island manufacturers together to discuss the state’s manufacturing landscape, share challenges and ask questions about issues affecting their businesses. The conversation highlighted several strengths that position Rhode Island to compete, including its history of excellence in textiles and jewelry, advanced technological capabilities in additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing and laser technologies, and a close-knit business community that makes it easier to connect with decision-makers and resources. Despite its small size, Rhode Island benefits from a strong network of manufacturers and partners who are invested in the state’s economic future.

Manufacturers also shared concerns about the rising cost of doing business, from diesel fuel and transportation to insurance, materials and the impact of tariffs on international trade. Workforce development remains another major challenge, with companies working to recruit and retain employees with the right technical and soft skills. Even when qualified workers are available, barriers such as transportation, affordable child care and housing can make it difficult for them to enter and remain in the workforce. Participants also discussed the importance of ongoing training and upskilling to help workers keep pace with evolving technologies and industry needs.

The discussion explored potential solutions, including alternative energy incentives, greater state-level support for manufacturers, and financing options that could help companies remain competitive in international markets. Participants also raised opportunities in emerging areas such as maritime electrification, battery technology and advanced manufacturing. Throughout the roundtable, the value of collaboration was clear. By connecting manufacturers with policymakers, state agencies and industry resources, Polaris MEP helps ensure that Rhode Island businesses have opportunities to share their experiences, identify common challenges and contribute to conversations about the future of manufacturing in the state.
