Safety violation

OSHA’s Top 10 violations cost manufacturers millions in fines and lost productivity every year.

In Rhode Island:

  • Over 40% of violations stem from planned inspections.
  • Nearly 60% come from employee complaints or referrals from professionals and government agencies.
  • Companies with prior violations average two OSHA visits every five years.
  • While many fines are negotiable, not all are—and penalties can reach $16,550 per serious violation and $165,514 for willful/repeat violations.

Common Violations for RI Manufacturers

The most-cited OSHA 1910 standards nationally and in Rhode Island are the same—but their frequency differs. In Rhode Island, manufacturers are commonly cited for violating the following areas:

  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO);
  • Machine Guarding;
  • Hazard Communications;
  • Respiratory Protection;
  • Injury & Incident Reporting; and
  • Emergency Action Plans.
