Polaris MEP Launches Apprenticeship Challenge to Help Rhode Island Manufacturers Build a Stronger Workforce

by | Nov 4, 2026

Polaris MEP brought together Rhode Island manufacturers, workforce development partners and industry experts on November 4 for Beyond Hiring: How Apprenticeships Can Strengthen Your Manufacturing Workforce. The event explored how registered apprenticeships can help manufacturers address workforce challenges, develop skilled employees and improve retention. Attendees learned about successful apprenticeship strategies, heard from workforce experts and connected with partners who can help them establish and strengthen apprenticeship programs.

Building on that effort, Polaris MEP has launched the Apprenticeship Challenge, inviting Rhode Island manufacturers to establish a registered apprenticeship program and enroll at least two employees. The first five eligible participating companies may qualify for up to $5,000 in employer incentives for each qualifying apprentice who completes six months of training, up to $10,000 in reimbursement toward related technical instruction, and up to $1,200 in apprenticeship mentor stipends.

In partnership with Building Futures’ Apprenticeship RI initiative, Polaris MEP will guide participating manufacturers through the process, from the initial application and program development to implementation and ongoing support. Apprenticeships can help businesses develop the technical skills their operations need, improve retention and productivity, and preserve valuable knowledge within their workforce. Rhode Island manufacturers interested in participating can learn more about the Apprenticeship Challenge and eligibility requirements HERE.
